plus sign is for “AND”
minus sign is for “NOT”
If you use the “advanced search” option, then you get pretty much the same results from any search engine. I like yahoo and google best. Google has a better advanced search selection than yahoo, but sometimes yahoo give you better results anyway.
google is the biggest and best, you just have to learn how to search correctly.
The plus sign means “and”, and it is mostly worthless as all words you type in the search box are spidered and the results near the top are the most relevant–they have the greatest percentage of your search words showing up.
As to the “tips & tricks” you need to learn boolean search terms.
AND
OR
- (minus)
appropriate quotation marks
I will give a quick example. Let’s say you want to find recipes using acorn nuts. So you google, “acorn nut” (don’t use the parenthesis) you are going to get thousands of pages about steel fasteners, and a few about oak trees, but not what you want. Now go back and enter more specific words in your search. “oak tree acorn nut recipes”. Lo and behold the webpages with recipes for cooking with acorn nuts will rise to the top.
Those are the basics. Google “boolean search” and you will find many pages explaining more in depth.
Schools should really be training proper internet searching as that is a job skill that is in high demand in our society.
google!
Yahoo
“Search engine submission” refers to the act of getting your web site listed with search engines.
Getting listed does not mean that you will necessarily rank well for particular terms, however.
It simply means that the search engine knows your pages exist
